Kristaq Turtulli

Writer, Poet and Journalist

Kristaq Petraq Turtulli is a celebrated Albanian writer, poet, journalist, painter, and novelist, currently based in Toronto, Canada. Born on November 18, 1954, in Korçë, he initially pursued studies at the artistic painting school in his hometown before completing a degree in Albanian Language and Literature at the University of Tirana. Over the decades, Turtulli has built a distinguished career as a professor, journalist, and editor, making significant contributions to Albania’s cultural landscape. His passion for the arts extends to painting, and his works have been featured in exhibitions, including notable ones in Toronto in 2012 and 2018.

Turtulli comes from a distinguished lineage of patriots and benefactor, deeply rooted in Albanian history.

A prolific writer, Turtulli’s work has earned numerous national and international accolades. His books have been translated into multiple languages, including English, Mandarin, and French. His trilogy – The Eye of Rites, The Tulip of Korea, and The Bitterness of the Kiss – is among his most notable works, alongside novels like The Inn With Two Doors (now in its fourth edition), The Shadow of the Bear, The Stream Weeps at Midnight, and Father and Fate, which have captured the hearts of readers in Albania and beyond.

He is also widely recognized for his contributions to children's literature, having won national awards for works such as The Adventures of Topik the Bear and The Birds. His stories have been translated and published in countries like Canada, the United States, and China, reaching an audience of both English and Mandarin speakers.

In Toronto, Turtulli remains deeply connected to the Albanian-Canadian community, organizing book promotions and cultural events. A member of the Union of Canadian Writers, he continues to engage with readers and art enthusiasts worldwide, participating in exhibitions, literary events, and promoting his works on the global stage. In honor of his outstanding contributions to Albanian arts and culture, the Albanian government awarded him the prestigious title of Ambassador of the Nation.

Some of his most acclaimed works include Mother (1981), Ana (1989), The Inn With Two Doors (1998, 2009), and The Disappointment of Venus (2023). He is also working on upcoming releases, including a collection of selected poems and The Girl with the Dog (Venera), scheduled for publication in 2024.

Turtulli’s diverse body of work, spanning from novels and poetry to painting, has made him an influential figure in both Albanian literature and the broader international arts scene. His exploration of themes such as identity, memory, and migration continues to inspire audiences across borders.
